SM U 46 was a diesel-electric submarine of the German Imperial Navy that was used in the First World War . After that it was active for a short time as O 2 ( Japanese ○ 二 潜水 艦 , maru ni sensuikan ) in the Japanese Navy .

Calls

U 46 ran on 18 May 1915 the Imperial Shipyard in Gdansk from the stack and was put into service on 17 December 1915th The German commanders of the submarine were Leo Hillebrand and Alfred Saalwächter .

During the First World War, U 46 carried out eleven patrols in the eastern North Atlantic and the Barents Sea . A total of 51 merchant ships from the Entente and neutral states with a total tonnage of 139,105 GRT were sunk.

The largest ship sunk by U 46 was the RMS Andania of the Cunard Line . The ship was sunk on January 27, 1918 on its voyage from Liverpool to New York .

Whereabouts

On November 26, 1918, U 46 was delivered to the Japanese Empire . There it was active in the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1920 to April 1921 - similar to the U 55 ( O 3 ) and U 125 ( O 1) . From April 1921 the boat was to be abandoned in the naval port of Kure . However, it was restored in Yokosuka as a test vehicle for rescues from submarines. On April 21, 1925, the boat got into a storm during a return transfer from Yokosuka to Kure and had to be abandoned. On August 5, 1927, an American ship discovered the wreck of the submarine west of Oahu ( Hawaii ). The remains were later finally sunk in an unknown location.
