SM U 36 was a German submarine of the Imperial Navy .

history

The boat was commissioned from the Germania shipyard in Kiel on March 29, 1912 and put into service on November 14, 1914.

First World War

On July 22, 1915, a group of fishing boats was sunk west of the Orkneys by U 36 . In the following two days, nine more fishing boats and three merchant ships (one French, one Russian and one Norwegian) were sunk. The armed merchant ship Columbella escaped U 36 . In addition, the 1500 GRT four-master Pass of Balhama was sent to Germany as a prize and converted into an auxiliary cruiser there . In 1917 he led a successful privateer war as SMS Seeadler under the command of Felix Graf von Luckner .

Whereabouts

On July 24, 1915, U 36 ran into the British submarine trap HMS Prince Charles near the island of North Rona . Unsuspecting, the boat came within 600 meters of the ship when the Prince Charles suddenly hoisted the British war flag and opened fire. U 36 was completely surprised and sank after heavy hits. The commander and 15 of his people were saved. 18 seafarers were killed.
