SM U 120 was a diesel-electric mines - Submarine of Class P II of the German Imperial Navy in the First World War .

Commissioning

U 120 was commissioned on May 27, 1916 expired on 20 June 1918 at the AG Vulcan in Hamburg from the stack and was put into service on August 31, 1918th The boat was assigned to the Mediterranean submarine flotilla . The first and only German commander was Kapitänleutnant Hans-Joachim von Mellenthin .

Von Mellenthin had already been awarded the Order Pour le Mérite when he took command of U 120 . Together with UB 43 and UB 49 he had sunk over 150,000  GRT of shipping space. Until the end of the war, however, he was no longer able to move into the Mediterranean with the U 120 and also to carry out an enemy mission.

Whereabouts

U 120 was delivered to the Kingdom of Italy on November 22, 1918 and scrapped in La Spezia in April 1919 after a brief visit .
