SM U 6 (His Majesty Submarine 6) was a petroleum-electric submarine of the German Imperial Navy , which was used in the First World War .
Calls
U 6 was launched on May 18, 1910 at the Germania shipyard in Kiel and was put into service on August 12, 1910. The commanders of the submarine were Wilhelm-Friedrich Starke , Otto Steinbrinck and Reinhold Lepsius .
In 4 war missions, the commanders and their crews achieved 13 sinkings against merchant ships of the Entente and neutral states with a total tonnage of 4,654 GRT .
Whereabouts
On September 15, 1915, U 6 was off the Norwegian coast west of Stavanger . Because of the cold air, the exhaust gases from the internal combustion engines were visible from afar. The British submarine E16 under commander E. Talbot sighted U 6 and shot both bow torpedoes at the German submarine from a distance of almost 500 meters abeam. One of the torpedoes hit U 6 below the command tower. Then dropped U 6 at the following position 58 ° 55 ' N , 5 ° 10' O . Of the 29 crew members, 5 survived. Oberleutnant zur See Reinhold Lepsius was also among the dead.
