SM U-71 was a German submarine - minelayer , who in World War I was used.
Construction and technical data
U 71 belonged to the U 71 - U 72 series . Together with U 72 - U 80 , the submarine was an official draft of the war order E or UE . It was built at the AG Vulkan shipyard in Hamburg (like U 72 and U 75 - U 80 ). U 73 and U 74 were built at the Imperial Shipyard in Gdansk . U 71 was launched on 31 October 1915 from the stack and was put into service on 20 December 1915th
The boat was a single-hull type ocean going boat with saddle tanks. The surface displacement was 755 tons and 832 tons submerged. The boat was 56.8 meters long, 5.9 meters wide and (surfaced) 4.86 meters deep. The machine system consisted of two Benz four-stroke six-cylinder diesel engines (S6 Ln) with a total output of 900 hp for overwater travel and two Siemens double-modyn electric motors with a total output of 660 kW for underwater travel. The maximum speed was 10.6 kn over water and 7.9 kn under water. The boat was armed with two 50 cm torpedo tubes (one in the bow, one in the stern) and a 10.5 cm and an 8.8 cm on-board cannon. In addition, there were two mine shafts with 38 mines in the stern of the submarine . The crew consisted of 4 officers and 28 men.
Calls
The commanders of the submarine were Hugo Schmidt (December 20, 1915 - April 19, 1917), Walter Gude (April 20, 1917 - November 27, 1917), Otto Dröscher (November 28, 1917 - January 27, 1918), Richard Scheurlen (January 28, 1918 - July 29, 1918) and Kurt Slevogt (July 30, 1918 - October 14, 1918).
U 71 was assigned to the I. U-Flotilla from April 1916 .
U 71 carried out 18 operations during the First World War , mainly in the North Sea . A total of 16 merchant ships from the Entente and neutral states with a total tonnage of approx. 11,533 GRT were sunk. In addition, the British minesweeper Blackmorevale with 750 GRT was sunk . The warship sank on May 1, 1918 off the coast of Scotland through a mine laid by U 71 . 26 seafarers were killed.
fate
U 71 was delivered to the victorious powers on February 23, 1919 and scrapped in Cherbourg in 1921 .
