Horst-Günter Gregor (*  24. July 1938 in Elbing ; †  25. April 1995 in Leipzig ) was a GDR - Swimmer . He won two European championship titles and three silver medals at the Olympic Games in various relay competitions in the 1960s .

Sporting successes

Horst-Günter Gregor took fourth place at the European Championships in 1958 with the 4-by-200-meter freestyle relay and with the 4-by-100-meter relay relay. He then moved from SC Aufbau Magdeburg to SC DHfK Leipzig . With the team of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) he became European champion in the 4 x 100 meter relay relay in Leipzig in 1962 and took eighth place over 100 meters freestyle. In 1964 he improved the European record over 100 meters butterfly to 59.3 seconds, but this distance was not yet Olympic. At the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo , he won a silver medal for the all-German team , starting with the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay and the 4 x 100 meter relay relay. Two swimmers from the GDR and two from the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) were in action in both seasons.

After 1964, separate teams from the FRG and the GDR started at the Olympic Games instead of the all-German team. With the GDR relay, Horst-Günter Gregor was European champion in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay in Utrecht in 1966. In addition, he took second place at the European Championships in 1966 with the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay and the 4 x 100 meter relay relay as well as in the individual competition over 200 meters butterfly. Two years later at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 , he again took second place in the 4 x 100 meter relay with the GDR team.

At GDR championships he won a total of 21 championship titles, including over 100 meters butterfly (1962, 1963 and 1966), over 200 meters butterfly (1964, 1965, 1966 and 1968) and over 100 meters freestyle (1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1962, 1966 and 1968) 14 national singles titles.

Life after competitive sport

Horst-Günter Gregor was married to the swimmer Bärbel Walter , his son Jens Gregor finished fourth at the European Championships in 1981. In 1961 he finished his studies as a civil engineer . From 1968 to 1976 he was a member of the Leipzig District Parliament and from 1979 to 1992 he was the director of the State Secretariat for Physical Culture and Sport, responsible for the sports facilities. After the reunification he was chairman of the Saxon Swimming Association.
