SM U 56 was a submarine of the Imperial Navy . The type ship of the class of six boats, which were built between 1914 and 1916 at the Germania shipyard in Kiel with construction numbers 233 to 238, was U 51 .

Technical specifications

The six boats of the class displaced 715 tons when surfaced, 902 tons submerged and 1,050 tons with full combat equipment. The range of action was 9,400 nautical miles at surface and cruising speed of 8 knots, 55 nautical miles submerged at 5 knots. The boats had four torpedo tubes (two in the bow and two in the stern) and two 8.8-cm deck guns. The crew consisted of 36 men.

history

The boat was laid down on December 28, 1914, launched on April 18, 1916, and put into service on June 23, 1916 and assigned to the Second Flotilla.

The boat undertook only one war voyage under the command of Lieutenant Hermann Lorenz. It sank four merchant ships with a total of 5374 GRT, including the Norwegian Ivanhoe . On October 20, 1916, in the Barents Sea , the boat was attacked with gunfire by the Russian destroyer Grosowoi under Lieutenant Korneev near the Norwegian island of Khorne near Vardø . The boat was able to submerge but was reported sunk by the Russian commander. Two weeks later, on the morning of November 3, 1916, U 56 put the crew of the Ivanhoe he had recovered ashore near Lodsvik . The Norwegian sailors were on board the submarine during the Grozovoi's attack on U 56 and their reports of this incident coincided with those of the Russians.

After that, the boat stopped reporting and has therefore been missing with all 35 crew members since November 3, 1916.
