Olaf Mayer

Olaf Mayer (born February 18, 1961 ) is a former Austrian amateur boxer in heavyweight (81-91 kg) and super heavyweight (+ 91 kg).

Career as a boxer

Mayer was around 1.86 m tall during his competitive career. He was Austrian heavyweight champion four times in a row from 1979 to 1982 and Austrian super heavyweight champion in 1983. In December 1979 he was vice world champion of the junior heavyweight division in Yokohama . He was only defeated in the final by the American Marvis Frazier , son of boxing legend Joe Frazier .

At the chemistry cup in March 1982 in Halle he reached 3rd place after losing to Jürgen Fanghänel in the semi-final . At the World Cup in May of the same year in Munich, he lost to the Russian Alexander Jagubkin .

At the European Championships in May 1983 in Varna , Bulgaria , he lost in the quarter-finals to Alexander Mirozhnichenko .

In 1984 he took part in the super heavyweight division at the 23rd Summer Olympics in Los Angeles . He was Austria's first boxer in this weight class at the Olympic Games, after him only Biko Botowamungu competed in this weight class for Austria in 1988. Mayer met the German Peter Hussing in the first fight , to whom he lost on points.
