Marvis Frazier (born September 10, 1960 in Philadelphia ) is a former American heavyweight boxer and son of Joe Fraziers .

amateur

Frazier was one of the best amateurs in his class. Although he weighed only 90 kg, he was victorious in 58 fights in 56, losing only twice. He beat Tim Witherspoon , among others . In 1979 he won the Golden Gloves tournament and was junior world champion in Yokohama . In 1980 he became the American heavyweight champion, but was then knocked out in the Olympic qualification against James Broad by a single direct hit in the first round, which should be a bad sign.

His record was 56-2

Professional career

In 1980 he turned professional. After just eight wins, he beat his undefeated amateur conqueror James Broad in 1983, at that time twelve fights and twelve wins, on points. In the next fight, Frazier won against Joe Bugner . Immediately afterwards he went on with only ten professional fights in a non-title fight against world champion Larry Holmes . Holmes, who weighed 10 kg more and was much more experienced with 44 wins, gave him no chance in this duel on November 25, 1983 and won by technical knockout in the first round.

Frazier defeated in the following years, among others, James Tillis and James Smith ; against Tillis he was counted standing, against Smith he was down. On July 26, 1986, he faced the young, aspiring Mike Tyson and lost again by first-round knockout. After three more fights, he ended his career in 1988.
