Willie James Broad (born January 27, 1958 in Greensboro , North Carolina , USA ; † November 20, 2001 ) was an American heavyweight boxer.

Amateur career

Broad won the preliminary rounds for the 1980 Olympic Games by beating Marvis Frazier , son of Joe Frazier , in the final . Due to the boycott of the USA, however, he could not participate in the games.

He beat Chris McDonald and lost to the eventual WBA world champion Tony Tubbs .

Professional career

After twelve fights, all of which Broad could win, including a point win over his previously undefeated compatriot Donnie Long , he met Marvis Frazier, whom he had already defeated in the amateurs. Frazier was unbeaten at the time, but had only played eight fights. Frazier got the revenge by winning on points. 1984 Broad boxed against the unbeaten Eddie Greg (record 20-0-1) for the vacant North American championship and won by TKo in the eighth round. He lost this title the following year to the former WBA and later WBC world champion Tim Witherspoon by knockout in the second round. He then lost to Tony Tucker , Francesco Damiani , Greg Page , Johnny Du Plooy and Donovan Ruddock, among others . He also lost his last fight, which took place in 1993 in Melrose Park , Illinois , USA .

death

James Broad died on November 20, 2001 at the age of 43 in his hometown of Greensboro , North Carolina .
