The urban area is cut irregularly, enclosing Stone Park almost completely and an unincorporated exclave with the Maywood Park Race Track . Melrose Park encloses a portion of the non-incorporated areas of Leyden Township and the properties there have a postal address in Melrose Park.
The main east-west connection is West Lake Street, which reaches the urban area just north of its southeast corner and then traverses the entire east-west extension of Melrose Park in a west-northwest direction. The western section to North Mannheim Road is US Highway 20 , while Highways US 12 and US45 run as North Mannheim Road in a north-south direction through Melrose Park. Other important connections are Illinois State Route 64 or North Avenue, which in sections also represents the northern city limits, and North 25th Avenue.
history
The residents of a then not incorporated part of the Proviso Township voted in 1882 to found their own municipality. This was initially called Melrose , in 1894 Park was added to the name. The population of the area was subject to a steady influx. At the beginning of the 20th century there were 2592 residents in Melrose Park, but the population growth leveled off.
On April 19, 1920, on Palm Sunday, a tornado with the strength F4 cut a 100 m wide and over 1000 m long aisle through the village and killed ten residents. The Sacred Heart Church and its convent were destroyed.
In the years after World War I , America's economy began to boom and a number of businesses opened or expanded in Melrose Park, increasing the number of jobs in the area. This trend continued after World War II when more companies moved to Melrose Park, including Zenith Electronics , Alberto-Culver, and International Harvester (now Navistar ).
