The company increased its sales by 21 percent between 2006 and 2009, with pre-tax earnings more than doubling over the same period. Two thirds of this turnover was generated in the USA.

The company's brands include Alberto VO5, St. Ives, TRESemme, Consort and Nexxus. The Sugar Twin, Mrs. Dash, Static Guard, Molly McButter and Baker's Joy products are also manufactured.

On September 27, 2010, Alberto-Culver was taken over by the British-Dutch group Unilever for a 20 percent premium on the previous day’s rate , which with this acquisition has become the global market leader for hair conditioner products.
