Sotirios Kyrgiakos ( Greek Σωτήριος Κυργιάκος , born July 23, 1979 in Megalochori , Trikala ) is a former Greek football player .
Career
society
In January 2005 he moved from his hometown club Panathinaikos Athens, initially on loan to the Scottish club Glasgow Rangers and was then permanently committed to the Glasgow Rangers after the season. Kyrgiakos played a total of 22 Premier League games and eight Champions League games for Glasgow Rangers. For the 2006/07 season he made a free transfer to the German Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt , for which he played a total of 51 Bundesliga games, five DFB Cup games and six UEFA Cup games.
After his contract with Frankfurt had expired, Kyrgiakos returned to Greece after three and a half years and signed a five-year contract with the Greek first division club AEK Athens on August 1, 2008 . After one season, he moved to Premier League club Liverpool in summer 2009 , where he received a two-year contract.
During the 2011 summer break, VfL Wolfsburg signed Kyrgiakos. He signed a two-year contract until June 30, 2013 and got the shirt number 16. On January 31, 2012 Kyrgiakos was loaned to Sunderland AFC until the end of the season. For the 2012/13 season Kyrgiakos returned to Wolfsburg, but did not get beyond the status of reservist. After the season he left the club after his contract expired.
In March 2014 he signed a contract with the Australian club Sydney Olympic . There he completed two league games and then ended his active career.
National team
After his debut against Sweden in 2002 , Kyrgiakos fought for a regular place in the Greek national team under Otto Rehhagel . However , he was unable to take part in the 2004 European Championship due to an injury. For the European Football Championship in Austria and Switzerland in 2008 , he was reappointed to the Greek squad and also used in all three Greek games during the tournament.
Style of play
The 1.93 meter tall and 88 kilo heavy central defender is considered a good man hit. In addition, his headball strength is feared in set pieces, which has earned him the reputation of a player with a near-perfect header game.
