In 2017 he was appointed Member of the British Empire by Queen Elisabeth II .

Career

society

Born in Northern Ireland, he began his professional career in the youth team at Aston Villa . After very successful games in youth, he joined the first team at the beginning of the 2003/04 season. He made his debut on September 18, 2004 against Norwich City . He made his international debut on February 9, 2005 against Canada . In July 2007 he signed a contract with Fulham FC . At the beginning of 2008 he was awarded to the Glasgow Rangers , who committed him after six months for a transfer fee of 3 million pounds. In May 2010 he was named Scotland's Footballer of the Year . In the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League , the Rangers finished third in the group stage behind Manchester United and Valencia CF , which they secured with their only win against Turkish club Bursaspor , who had become Turkish champions for the first time . In third place, they were able to continue playing in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League and made it to the round of 16, but failed there at PSV Eindhoven , third in the Dutch Eredivisie . They had laid a good foundation with a goalless draw in Eindhoven, but then lost the home game 0-1. At the same time, the Rangers secured first place in the championship and were thus for the third qualifying round of the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League . In this they failed but at the Swedish champions Malmö FF : after a 0-1 home defeat they could only achieve a 1-1 draw in the second leg. As a losing team, they could then continue to play in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League , but after two games against the Slovenian champions NK Maribor it was over. In the Scottish Premier League 2011/12 , the Rangers only finished second and were then relegated to the fourth division due to financial problems.

In July 2012, Davis left the Rangers like most of his teammates and moved to the English first division promoted FC Southampton on a free transfer . In the 2012/13 season "The Saints" held their own in 14th place in the league. Eighth place was achieved in 2013/14 and seventh in 2014/15 for the third qualifying round of the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League . In this they prevailed 3-0 and 2-0 against Vitesse Arnheim , the fifth of the Dutch Eredivisie . In the play-offs before the group stage, they only scored 1-1 in the home game against Danish champions FC Midtjylland and then lost the away game with 0-1. Davis only missed the home game against the Danes, but was used in the other three games. In the Premier League 2015/16 , “The Saints” secured a place in the group stage of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League in sixth place . Davis had contributed to this in 34 league games with five goals.

In early 2019, he initially moved back to the Rangers on loan and was taken over for free in July.

National team

In October 2004 Steven Davis was invited to the national team for the first time, but only sat on the bench in the qualifying game for the 2006 World Cup against Azerbaijan on October 9 . On February 9, 2005, he made his debut in the national jersey in a friendly against Canada , he played over 90 minutes. He was then a regular player and has only been missing in 14 games, mostly less important friendly games. In Northern Ireland's historic victory against England on September 7, 2005, the only competitive win against the British Isles' neighbors, he was a template for the 1-0 winner. In the 2: 3 defeat in the World Cup qualifier against Wales, he scored his first international goal a month later to equalize 2: 2 in the meantime. Overall, he came in the unsuccessful qualification for Northern Ireland on six missions. In May 2006, he wore the captain's armband for the first time in place of the non-nominated regular captain Aaron Hughes at two friendlies .

In qualifying for the European Championship in 2008 , he played all 12 games over the full playing time, with one substitution. He also played the following World Cup qualification and the qualification for the Euro 2012 as a regular player and only missed 2 of the 10 group games. In the World Cup qualification against San Marino on October 15, 2008 he scored his second international goal, two more followed in the European Championship qualification. In his 50th international match against Estonia on October 7, 2011 , the penultimate game in the European Championship qualification, he wore the armband again and scored his fourth international goal. In the next game, the last of goalkeeper Maik Taylor, he was allowed to wear the armband again, but after that he always wore the captain's armband with a few exceptions.

In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , he played every minute of the game, but the qualification was again unsuccessful for the Northern Irish. In its third European Championship qualification, for the European Championship 2016 , Northern Ireland succeeded for the first time in securing participation in a European Championship finals and thus again after 30 years for a major tournament. In the game against Greece he secured the 3-1 success with two goals. For the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included as captain in the squad of Northern Ireland . He led the team on the field in all four European Championship games and played all games until the last minute. The team reached the round of 16 and then eliminated against Wales.

In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , the Northern Irish took second place behind world champions Germany , but were eliminated after a 0-1 home defeat and a goalless away game against Switzerland. In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League , the Northern Irish played in League B and lost the games against Austria and the national soccer team Bosnia and Herzegovina . The qualification for the EM 2020 let them meet Germany again. Although the Northern Irish started with four wins and led the group halfway through the games, in the second half they only managed a goalless draw in their home game against the Dutch , which meant they missed group victory . The games against Germany were lost and in the Netherlands there was a 3-1 defeat after a 1-0 lead and two goals conceded in stoppage time. It was only enough for third place. Nevertheless, the Northern Irish still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs. They must first play against Nations League opponents Bosnia and Herzegovina and if they win against the winner of the game Slovakia against Ireland.
