In 2017 he made his debut in the senior national team , with which he took part in the 2018 World Cup finals the following year . At the beginning of his national team career , he stood in the shadow of the regular central defender duo Victor Lindelöf and team captain Andreas Granqvist .
Career
Career start in Sweden with two championship titles
Helander started playing football at Kvarnby IK . He joined the Malmö FF junior division through Husie IF in early 2007. In the 2011 season he temporarily moved up to the squad of the first division team and made his debut in the Allsvenskan shortly before the end of the season in October of that year . He stayed in the squad and was also in the following season in twelve league games on the field. At the same time he was nominated for the various junior national teams of Svenska Fotbollförbundet .
In the 2013 season , Helander took a regular position on the defensive, but was temporarily out of play due to an injury. Ultimately, he played 18 games this season and won the Swedish championship with Jiloan Hamad , Ricardinho , Erik Friberg , Magnus Eriksson and Markus Halsti five points ahead of runner-up AIK . In the summer of the following year he was one of the pillars when the club reached the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in club history . In August he also scored his first goal for the club in the Allsvenskan in a 3-0 win over IFK Norrköping . Although he finished the group stage of the 2014/15 Champions League season with the club as bottom of the table, he defended the Swedish championship title in the 2014 season. At the same time, he stayed in the Swedish U-21 national team , with which he qualified for the 2015 European Championship . As a result, national coach Erik Hamrén nominated him in November 2014 for the internationals against Montenegro and France , but ultimately he was not used. At the junior European championship tournament held in the Czech Republic, he was again a regular on the defensive and played in all five tournament games. With a 4-3 win on penalties , the Swedish selection won the title in the final against Portugal . After the tournament was over, UEFA selected him for the tournament's team, which includes two other Swedes, Victor Lindelöf and Oscar Lewicki .
Moved to Italy and made his national team debut
During the tournament, Helander announced his move to Italy, where he joined Hellas Verona . In the season 2015/16 he was after his debut on Matchday at 0: 1 away defeat at Inter Milan over long distances a regular for his new club, the against relegation in the Serie B played. Despite a coaching change from Andrea Mandorlini to Luigi Delneri , as a result of which Helander remained four games without use, he rose at the end of the season as bottom of the table with the club from the Italian elite series. Nevertheless, national coach Hamrén had nominated him again for the senior team in November 2015, again he was without playing minutes.
In the summer of 2016, Helander moved within Italy to FC Bologna , the first division club loaned him until the summer of 2017 and, according to media reports, agreed a purchase option. At his new club he met his compatriot Emil Krafth . From October he was a regular player before an injury slowed him down and again prevented his national team debut. After his recovery, he was back in the starting line-up of his club from mid-February, and in March national coach Janne Andersson nominated him again for the upcoming international matches for qualifying for the 2018 World Cup against Belarus and a friendly against Portugal . After he had not played in the first game, the debutant started the 3-2 away win after 0-2 deficit against the southern Europeans and was replaced by Oscar Hiljemark just a few minutes before the final whistle .
The agreed purchase option was drawn before the loan ended, so that Helander was firmly committed to Bologna in the summer of 2017. For long periods he was a regular at his club, in 29 championship games he contributed to the relegation of the club from Emilia-Romagna . So he stayed in the circle of the national team, but did not get beyond the status of a supplementary player and ran only sporadically for the Swedish selection. After playing his fourth international match in March 2018 , he was part of Sweden's 23-player squad for the upcoming World Cup in Russia in the summer . Neither in the preparatory games directly before the tournament nor during the group stage, he was used as a replacement in central defense for the regular player Lindelöf, who was ill in the first round match against South Korea , national coach Andersson relied on Helander's former Malmö team-mate Pontus Jansson .
Move to Scotland
In 2019, Helander joined the Glasgow Rangers .
