Ianis Hagi (born October 22, 1998 in Istanbul , Turkey ) is a Romanian football player who plays mainly as an attacking midfielder. He is under contract with the Scottish club Glasgow Rangers and is a Romanian international . He is the son of the Romanian national goal scorer Gheorghe Hagi .

Club career

At the age of 10, he joined the Gheorghe Hagi Football Academy and made his debut for Viitorul Constanța on December 5, 2014 at the age of only 16 in Liga I in a home defeat against FC Botoșani . When he first appeared, his father was the coach. On May 29, 2015, Hagi scored his first goal as a senior, adding a goal in a 4-4 draw against the same opponent while also being in the starting XI for the first time. In October, The Guardian named him one of the World's Top Fifty Talents of the 1998 Class.

On July 10, 2016, Hagi joined AC Florence for a transfer fee of 2 million euros . On October 23, he made his league debut there, replacing Josip Iličić in a 5-3 away win against Cagliari Calcio .

Hagi returned to Viitorul Constanța on January 18, 2018 for a transfer fee of 2 million euros, with Fiorentina being entitled to 30 percent of the transfer fee in the event of a resale. At the age of 20 he was already the team captain .

In summer 2019 he moved to the Belgian club KRC Genk on a three-year contract . At the end of January 2020, he was loaned to the Scottish club Glasgow Rangers for the rest of the season with a subsequent purchase option . At the end of May 2020, Glasgow Rangers exercised the purchase option, so Hagi finally changed clubs.

National team

Hagi represented Romania in various youth selections. At the U-21 European Football Championship in 2019 , he reached the semi-finals with Romania , where they lost 4-2 to Germany .

Hagi made his A-team debut on November 17, 2018 in a 3-0 win over Lithuania in the UEFA Nations League . In the 68th minute he was substituted on for Claudiu Keşerü .
