societies

Romeu joined FC Barcelona's youth academy in 2004 from local rivals Espanyol Barcelona . He rose to FC Barcelona B in the 2008/09 season through good performance in the club's A youth team . He made his debut for the second team of FC Barcelona, which at that time was still playing in the Tercera División , against UD Ibiza-Eivissa as a central midfielder. At the end of the season the team managed by coach Pep Guardiola promotion to the Segunda División B . Just one season later, the team rose again. After victories in the relegation games against UE Sant Andreu , Real Jaén and Polideportivo Ejido , Romeu played with Barça B in the second-highest Spanish division from the 2010/11 season .

In August 2010 he made his competitive debut for the Barcelona first team. Oriol played the full game in the 1: 3 defeat by Sevilla FC in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup . After a number of clubs, including Arsenal London and Liverpool FC , had expressed interest in Romeu, he extended his contract a little later until 2012.

In the 2010/11 season Romeu played 18 games for FC Barcelona B in the Segunda División , 16 of them on the grid. In early 2011, he suffered a ruptured meniscus that prevented him from playing for four months. After suffering an injury, he made his league debut for the A-team on the 37th matchday of this season. On August 4, 2011, Chelsea announced the commitment of Romeus. Contrary to original assumptions, FC Barcelona does not have a buyback option, but a right of first refusal if Chelsea wants to sell the player. For the 2013/14 season moved Romeu for a year on loan back to Spain for Valencia . On August 4, 2014 it was awarded for one year to the Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart . In the Bundesliga he made his debut on August 24, 2014 (1st match day) in a 1-1 draw in the away game against Borussia Mönchengladbach . On May 26, 2015, Romeu said goodbye to the Stuttgart fans and returned to Chelsea, although he would have liked to stay with Stuttgart for another year.

For the 2015/16 season Romeu was committed to Southampton FC for three years.

National team

Romeu's first game for a Spanish national team came on October 3, 2007, when he made his debut for the U-17 team against Andorra. After four more appearances for the U-17, with whom he became European champion in 2008 , Romeu then played 11 appearances for the U-19 national team of Spain. Romeu took part in the 2009 European Championships with the U-19s . For Spain the tournament was over after the preliminary round. Romeu, who was sent off with a red card in the final group game against France, was in the starting line-up in all three games.

In the same year Romeu was a participant in the 2009 Junior World Cup . Romeu started the last group game against Venezuela and the knockout round of 16 against Italy. A year later things went much better for the Spaniards at the U-19 European Championships in France . With Romeu as a regular player, Spain was only defeated 1: 2 by hosts France in the final.
