Career

society

The son of Nigerian parents was born in Dublin in 2000 and moved to England at a young age , where the family settled in the London area. At the age of four he started playing football for suburban club Ryan FC. He then played for the youth teams of the London clubs Chelsea , Arsenal , Watford and Leyton Orient before moving to Southampton FC in 2016 . Shortly after his arrival, he established himself in the Saints youth team and attracted attention with his strong performances. In a 4-1 home win in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup in mid-December 2017, he scored a hat trick. A month later, Obafemi made his debut in the 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the first team when he came on in the 82nd minute for Manolo Gabbiadini . At 17 years and 116 days, he became the second youngest player to appear in a Premier League game for the Saints , behind Luke Shaw . This brief assignment remained his only one in the 2017/18 season .

Due to his strong form in the reserve team, he got more assignments with the professionals in the next season 2018/19 . In the 2-2 draw against Manchester United on December 1, 2018, he started from the start for the first time and directly prepared the interim opening goal by Stuart Armstrong . In his next outing against Huddersfield Town , he scored the goal to make it 3-1 five minutes after being substituted on. This season he came on six missions in which he managed a goal and an assist.

National team

Obafemi would have been eligible to play for the national teams of England, Nigeria and the Republic of Ireland. After he had already played for Ireland's U-19s , he decided in November 2018 to continue playing for the Boys in Green .

On November 6, 2018, he was called up for the first time, as part of the friendly against Northern Ireland and the UEFA Nations League game against Denmark , in the squad of the Irish senior team . He finally made his debut on November 19 when he came on as a substitute in the 0-0 draw in Denmark in the closing stages.

Private

His older brother Afolabi Obafemi is also a soccer player, but has so far only played in the English lower house.
