Career

society

Jack Stephens, born in Torpoint , attended Torpoint Community College and at the age of 11 moved to the Plymouth Argyle junior academy . He played in various junior teams and in September 2010 he trained with the first team for the first time. On September 18 (7th matchday) he made his debut in the 3-2 home win against Sheffield Wednesday in the third highest English division when he came on in the closing stages for the winning goal scorer Craig Noone . In this 2010/11 season he came only sporadically as a right full-back and ended the season with five league appearances.

On April 5, 2011 Jack Stephens moved for a transfer fee of 150,000 pounds sterling to league rivals FC Southampton , where he signed a three-year contract. There he was assigned to the Development Squad and made his debut in the first team on January 7, 2012 in the 2-1 away win over Coventry City , when he came on in the closing stages for Dan Harding . This was his only use in the 2011/12 season and in the following 2012/13 season he did not play a single game for the now first division club . In the Premier League 2 he rose to captain during this time.

On March 13, 2014, he moved on loan to third division club Swindon Town , where he should collect match practice at men's level. He made his debut on March 15, 2014 (37th matchday) in a 0-0 draw against Bristol City . With the Robins he was in the last ten league games of the 2013/14 season over the full distance on the field and returned to Southampton in May 2014, only to return to Swindon on September 1 for four months on loan. He was once again an undisputed regular player and the loan business was later expanded until the end of the 2014/15 season . On January 17, 2015 (26th match day), he scored his first goal in the Swindon Towns jersey in a 3-1 home win against Chesterfield FC . In total, he played 40 league games for the club and reached with this the promotion playoffs, where they lost the final against Preston North End 4-0.

On July 31, 2015, Jack Stephens signed a new four-year contract with Southampton FC and was immediately loaned to the second division club Middlesbrough for the entire 2015/16 season. At Boro he was regularly in the matchday squad, but only made two short appearances in the league and four cup games by the turn of the year, so that he was ordered back on January 4, 2016. On February 1, 2016, he moved to third division club Coventry City in a loan deal until the end of the 2015/16 season . He made his debut on February 7, 2016 (30th matchday) in a 1-1 draw against Port Vale . In the Sky Blues he was also a regular again and returned to Southampton after 16 league games.

For the following 2016/17 season he stayed at Southampton FC, but was only used in cup games at the start of the season. On January 2, 2017, he made his debut in the 3-0 away defeat by Everton in the Premier League when he was substituted on for the injured Cédric Soares after just six minutes of play . He quickly established himself as a regular player and ended the season with 17 league appearances. In the next season 2017/18 he dropped out of the starting line-up, but pushed his way back into it in December 2017. On January 27, 2018, he scored his first goal for the Saints in a 1-0 cup win against Watford FC . He was also able to score in the next two Premier League games and he ended the season with 30 competitive appearances.

Even in the 2018/19 season he did not make the final breakthrough as a regular player, but was regularly on the field, especially in the second half of the season. In total, he completed 24 league games this season, in which he was able to score a goal. Under head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl , he rose to become an important regular in the 2019/20 season .

National team

In March 2012 Jack Stephens completed an international match for the England U18 national team . Between September and November 2012 he played four international matches for the U19s . From March 2015 to June 2015 he played six U20 games . Between September 2015 and March 2017, he played in eight international matches for the U21s , in which he scored a goal. With this selection he won the Toulon tournament in May and took part in the 2017 European Under-21 Championship in Poland , where he was not used in any game.
