Marouane Fellaini-Bakkioui (born November 22, 1987 in Etterbeek ) is a Belgian football player with Moroccan roots who is currently under contract with the Chinese first division club Shandong Luneng Taishan . He is a former international . He became known to a wider public through a bizarre photo that was taken during the Super Cup match between United States and Real Madrid on August 8, 2017.

Private

Fellaini was born in Tangier to Moroccan parents and grew up in Brussels. His father, Abdellatif , is a former soccer goalkeeper.

Career

In the club

Fellaini learned to play football in the youth of RSC Anderlecht . However, he began his professional career in 2006 at Standard Liège . In this club he became a fixture in the years to come and was able to win the Belgian championship in the 2007/08 season. This was Liège's first championship title in 25 years. Fellaini took third place in the Belgian Footballer of the Year election due to his performance this season.

After the season he moved to England for Everton FC for £ 15 million for five years . This was a new transfer record for both Everton and a Belgian player in general. For the first time he ran for Everton on Matchday 4 of the 2008/09 season in a 3-2 win against Stoke City . He scored his first goal in the Premier League on Matchday 7 in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle United . In the game against Manchester United on Matchday 9, his goal secured a point for the Toffees .

On September 2, 2013 Fellaini moved on the last day of the transfer window within the league for 27.5 million pounds sterling (around 32 million euros ) to Manchester United . In his first season at Manchester United, he could not convince. He was also plagued by numerous injuries during the season.

At the beginning of February 2019 Fellaini moved to Shandong Luneng Taishan in the Chinese Super League . On the first day of the 2020 season , Fellaini scored a hat trick against Dalian Professional that led his team to a 3-2 win.

In 2007 Fellaini took part with the Belgian team in the U-21 European Football Championship in the Netherlands and reached the semi-finals with his team. He played in a total of three games for his team, but missed the game against the Netherlands after seeing the yellow-red card against Israel after just 18 minutes.

Fellaini was also in the squad for fourth place for the Belgians at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . Here, however, he only played one game and after a yellow-red card against Brazil was no longer used in the remaining matches of the Belgians.

In the Belgian national team , he developed over time into an alternative in the midfield and was used in both the qualification for the 2010 World Cup and the European Championship 2012 , but missed the qualification for both tournaments. This then succeeded in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , when they were group winners before Croatia . At the World Cup, he scored in the first group game against Algeria five minutes after being substituted on , making it 1-1. In the following group matches as well as in the last sixteen and quarter-finals, he was then each in the starting line-up, which was eliminated in the quarter-finals against eventual runner-up Argentina . In the subsequent qualification for the European Championship in 2016 , he was used in eight out of ten games and scored four goals. He was then included in Belgium 's EM squad . He was in the first team in game one against Italy, which was lost 2-0. After that he was no longer used in the group stage and in the round of 16 against Hungary he was initially back on the bench. He only came into play in the final minutes. In the quarterfinals he was substituted on at half time, but the game against Wales was lost and he was eliminated with his team. At the 2018 World Cup , Fellaini was substituted on in all three preliminary round matches. This was also the case in the round of 16 , where he scored the 2-2 equalizer in the 3-2 win against Japan, nine minutes after being substituted on.

His last use for the national team took place in the semi-finals of the World Cup. After Fellaini was not included in the national team's games in autumn 2018, he announced his resignation from the national team on March 7, 2019.
