Geoffrey "Geoff" Sidebottom (born December 29, 1936 in Mapplewell , † November 3, 2008 in Scunthorpe ) was an English football goalkeeper . He was mostly overshadowed by Malcolm Finlayson at Wolverhampton Wanderers before moving to Aston Villa . With the "Villans" he won the league cup in 1961 .
Athletic career
The Yorkshire- born Sidebottom stood in his youth for the Wath Wanderers between the posts, who were connected as a young cadre forge with the Wolverhampton Wanderers. In September 1954 he was taken over into the professional division of the "Wolves" while he was also working in a foundry near Barnsley. In the same year he reached the final of the FA Youth Cup , which was lost to the "Busby Babes" from Manchester United . In the following years, the hoped-for sporting breakthrough failed, which was also due to the competitors Bert Williams and Malcolm Finlayson. On November 1, 1958, he finally made his debut at 1: 2 against West Bromwich Albion and immediately afterwards he completed the two subsequent encounters in the 1958/59 championship season against Preston North End and Burnley FC . In the following year, with a total of ten appearances, Sidebottom rarely got beyond the role of substitute behind Finlayson, although he made an important contribution on the way to winning the cup with a good performance in the fifth FA Cup round against Luton Town (despite the ultimately a clear 4-1 win, the game had been “on the brink” for a long time). He also played the quarter-final second leg in the European Cup , in which Wolverhampton lost to Barcelona 2: 5. In the subsequent 1960/61 season, he represented the injured Finlayson both at Charity Shield and in the first 18 of 22 league games before he said goodbye to Aston Villa in February 1961 .
In Joe Mercer's team , he played 87 competitive games in just under four years, including an appearance in the final second leg of the 1961 League Cup , when a 2-0 first leg defeat against Rotherham United could be turned around with a 3-0 win. In January 1965 he hired Scunthorpe United - there he was given preference over the future national goalkeeper Ray Clemence for a short time . Then Sidebottom ended his active career in the USA with the New York Generals and back in England with Brighton & Hove Albion . After a short time as a coach in North America, he worked as a window cleaner and building contractor away from the soccer business. He died in early November 2008 at the age of 71.
