Nuno Gomes [ ˈnunu ˈgomɯʃ ] (born July 5, 1976 in Amarante , Porto district ; actually Nuno Miguel Soares Pereira Ribeiro ) is a former Portuguese football player .
Career
society
At the age of eleven he began his career in the Boavista Porto Talent School . Nuno Gomes was considered one of Portugal's great young talents. He went through all the junior selections in his country and became European champion with the U-18 selection. The Portuguese took part in the 1996 Olympic Games with the U-21 . Nuno Gomes made his national team debut on January 24, 1996 at the age of 19 against France .
After the Euro 2000, Gomes moved from Benfica Lisbon , for whom he had played since the 1997/98 season, for a transfer fee of 17 million euros to Fiorentina . However, he did not succeed in replacing Gabriel Batistuta , who had left the club, on an equal footing. In his two years in Italy he scored only 16 goals and was sold back to Benfica Lisbon at the end of the 2001/02 season . After his contract with Benfica Lisbon was not renewed in July 2011, he moved to Sporting Braga on a free transfer , where he signed a one-year contract.
For the 2012/13 season Nuno Gomes moved to England for the Blackburn Rovers . He signed a two-year contract. On June 28, 2013 , Gomes agreed with the Rovers on a contract termination and thus ended his active career as a player.
National team
Gomes took part in the 2000 European Championship , the 2002 World Cup , the 2004 European Championship , the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship . At the 2006 World Cup he scored Portugal's only goal in the game for third place against Germany after being substituted on. Overall, he only spent one half on the pitch at the 2006 World Cup, but still managed to finish the World Cup with one goal on his account. After Luís Figo's resignation after the 2006 World Cup, Nuno Gomes became the captain of the Portuguese national team. At the EM 2008 he scored the next goal in the quarter-finals against Germany to 1: 2 (final score 2: 3), but could not prevent the Portuguese from being eliminated.
