The Divizia A 1956 was the 19th season in the history of the Romanian football league Divizia A. It started on March 18, 1956 and ended on November 18, 1956.

Champion became CCA Bucharest .

The 13 teams each played against each other twice. The last three teams were relegated to Divizia B , while two teams were promoted to reduce Divizia A to twelve teams. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams were tied at the end of the season, the goal quotient decided .
