The FC Politehnica Timișoara was a Romanian football club . It was founded in Timișoara in 1921 and played in Bucharest from 2001 until its dissolution in 2011 . The greatest successes of the club are the cup wins in 1958 and 1980 .

History of the club

History up to World War II

After the founding of the Technical University of Timișoara on November 11, 1920, the mathematics professor Traian Lalescu became the first rector and in 1921 founded the association Societatea sportiva Politehnica (Sports Association of the Technical University). After Chinezul , Poli was the second football club from Timișoara and consisted entirely of students.

After some successes in the early years - between 1924 and 1927 the club produced some national players - Poli got into financial difficulties at the beginning of the 1930s and was initially unable to build on previous performances. In the following years, the club only played in regional leagues before the club was one of the founding members of the newly created Divizia C in 1936 . In the season 1940/41 Poli managed promotion to the second highest Romanian league, the Divizia B . Due to the outbreak of the Second World War , the following season was no longer held.

Post war history

When the game started after the end of the war, Poli was classified in the Divizia B in the 1946/47 season according to the qualifications previously achieved, and in 1948 the first jump into the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A, was achieved . After the rise, the club changed its name in November 1948 to Clubul Sportiv Universitar Timișoara (German University Sports Club ) and in 1950 to Știința Timișoara (German science ). The performances were very variable. After a 3rd place in the 1950 season Știința rose from 1951 in the Divizia B, but managed the immediate promotion.

In the following years Știința became a fixture in Romanian football and always placed in the front of the table. The until then greatest success in the club's history came in the 1957/58 season , when Știința first finished the season in 3rd place tied with the master Petrolul Ploieşti and then won the Romanian Cup. Fifty years later, on August 3, 2008, the 16 players who had won the title, along with coach Dincă Schileru, were made honorary citizens of Timișoara.

1959 Știința had to relegate to Divizia B again. Also this time the immediate ascent was successful. And as in the last guest appearance in Divizia A, Știința rose after a 3rd place in the 1962/63 season in the following season, but again managed direct promotion. In 1966 the club changed its name to Politehnica Timișoara and rose again at the end of the 1966/67 season .

This time it was not until 1973 before Poli managed to return to the House of Lords. After changeable years, at the end of the 1970s they again rose to the top and Poli qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time in 1978 , where the club was able to prevail against MTK / VM Budapest , but was eliminated in the second round by Honvéd Budapest . 1980 followed with the victory in the cup final against Steaua Bucharest the last title win. In 1981 and 1983 Poli reached the cup final again, but lost both times to Universitatea Craiova and rose to Divizia B at the end of the 1982/83 season .

In the following period Poli developed into an elevator team and was only able to build on earlier successes and reach the UEFA Cup at the beginning of the 1990s. In the 1990/91 season , the team was initially able to prevail against Atlético Madrid and was eliminated in the 2nd round against Sporting Lisbon . His last European game to date was in the 1992/93 season against Real Madrid . The team did not lose a single one of their eight home games in the European Cup, but lost all away games.

From 1993 things went steadily downhill for Poli. After the club was privatized in the mid-1990s and the relegations in 1994 and 1997, the Italian Claudio Zambon took over the club with the aim of making it a fixture in Romanian football again. In 2000, the second division Dacia Piteşti Poli left its starting place in Divizia B. After disputes with the city of Timişoara, Zambon decided in 2001 to move Politehnica Timişoara to Bucharest. In the summer of 2001, George Ciorceri, a new coach, was hired who could only achieve two draws in the first six games of the 2001/02 season and dissolved his contract after two and a half months. In 2002 the club was relegated to Divizia C and, after relegated in 2007, now played in the fourth-highest Romanian soccer league, League IV. In March 2011, the club was excluded from all competitions after having failed to play championship games twice .
