Lazar Sfera (born April 29, 1909 in Lokve , Austria-Hungary (today in Serbia ), † August 24, 1992 ) was a Romanian football player . He played 159 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , and took part as a substitute player in the 1934 World Cup and the 1938 World Cup.

Career

Sfera began his career at his hometown club Politehnica Timișoara . Since the regional championship of Timișoara was dominated by local rivals Chinezul at that time , he could not take part in the national finals. In 1929 he left Poli and moved to local rivals Banatul , but moved on to România Cluj in the same year and joined Universitatea Cluj in 1931 .

When the Romanian professional league Divizia A was founded in 1932, "U Cluj" was one of the founding members and Sfera played his first game in the country's top division on September 11, 1932. After the runner-up in 1933 , U Cluj missed the championship again the following year. Sfera joined Venus Bucharest in 1934 , one of the most successful teams of the 1930s. With Venus he could win the Romanian championship in 1937 , 1939 and 1940 . When the game had to be interrupted in 1941 due to the outbreak of World War II, Sfera ended his career.

National team

Sfera played 14 games for the Romanian national soccer team . He made his debut on August 26, 1931 against Lithuania . He was able to win the Balkan Cup three times with the national team and was in the squad for the 1934 World Cup in Italy and for the 1938 World Cup in France , but was never used.
