Ion Timofte (born December 16, 1967 in Anina , Caraş-Severin County ) is a former Romanian football player . He played a total of 280 games in the Romanian Divizia A and the Portuguese SuperLiga .
Career
Timofte started playing soccer in his hometown Anina with Minerul Anina. At the age of 21 he moved to the neighboring club CSM Reșița , which at the time was represented in Divizia B (now Liga II ). In 1989 he signed the FC Politehnica Timișoara , which had just been promoted to Divizia A and was one of the best clubs in western Romania. At "Poli" Timofte was able to assert himself as a regular player in his first season and proved his scoring potential as a midfielder . At the end of the season he qualified for the UEFA Cup , where the club initially eliminated Atlético Madrid , but were eliminated in the second round by Sporting Lisbon . In the domestic league , the club finished in sixth place and missed re-qualification for the European Cup.
In 1991 Timofte left his home country like many Romanian national players before him and joined the Portuguese top club FC Porto . Here, too, he became a regular player and contributed nine or twelve goals to winning the championship titles in 1991/92 and 1992/93 . In 1994 he finally won the Portuguese Cup .
After three years Timofte left FC Porto and joined local rivals Boavista . At his new club it took Timofte a few years before he could establish himself as a regular player. It was not until the 1997/98 season that he established himself and found his accuracy again. He had previously won the 1997 Cup. In the 1998/99 season he scored 15 goals and won the runner-up behind FC Porto with his club. Timofte ended his career in 2000.
National team
Timofte played a total of ten games for the Romanian national soccer team and scored one goal. He made his debut on April 3, 1991 in the European Championship qualifier against Switzerland , when he was substituted on in the 89th minute for Florin Răducioiu . On April 17, 1991, he managed his only international goal in the friendly against Spain in Cáceres . Timofte was part of national coach Mircea Rădulescu's squad until he was replaced by Cornel Dinu in early 1992 after missing the European Championship qualification . Under Dinu he was only used in the World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands on May 20, 1992 and was then no longer considered.
After almost three years, Anghel Iordănescu brought Timofte back to the national team in February 1995, but only used him sporadically. For the last time he ran on November 15, 1995 in the final European Championship qualifier against Slovakia in the national jersey.
