Marcel Băban (born October 16, 1968 in Jimbolia , Timiș County ) is a former Romanian football player . The midfielder played a total of 100 games in the Romanian Divizia A , the Polish Ekstraklasa and the Czech Gambrinus League .
Career
The midfielder began his career with his hometown club Politehnica Timișoara . He completed his first season in the Romanian first division in 1991/92 . In his first two seasons he shone through his goal threat. This convinced those responsible from SV Darmstadt 98 , so that Băban was obliged for the 1993/94 regional league season. However, he was not used in Darmstadt once and moved back to Politehnica Timișoara for the 1994/95 season . Here he played two very strong seasons again, in which he scored 29 goals as a midfielder. He was then committed by Rapid Bucharest . With this change, his athletic decline began. He played very rarely and didn't score a single goal for three years. All of his attempts to gain a foothold abroad ( Germany , the Czech Republic , Croatia and Poland ) failed miserably. It was only after his return to Romania that he was able to begin to resume his old form. In 2006 he ended his professional career at the age of 38.

The then president Octavian Popescu of his home club FC Jimbolia named the youth club Băban in honor of FC Marcel Băban Jimbolia in December 2010 .
