Dumitru Berbece

Dumitru Berbece (born January 2, 1961 in Dămieneşti ) is a former Romanian handball player .

He played for Steaua Bucharest from 1979 . With the club from the capital, he was Romanian champion eleven times and won the Romanian Cup three times. After the Romanian Revolution in 1989 he moved to SG Leutershausen in the handball Bundesliga and was German runner-up in 1991/92. He then played in Valencia for a year and finally he was player-coach at a third-rate club in Germany until 1997.

For the Romanian national team , Berbece played 208 international matches, in which he scored 684 goals. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles he won the bronze medal with Romania, where he was only used in the group game against Algeria. At the 1986 World Cup he was ninth with Romania. The 1990 World Cup , where the Romanians won bronze, was more successful . In 1992 Berbece took part in his second Olympic Games . Romania finished eighth in Barcelona. In 1995 the Romanian national team was tenth at the World Cup .

After his active career, Berbece became a coach. He was in charge of SG Leutershausen, TV Schriesheim , HCM Brașov and Corona Brașov (women).
