Life

Wartislaw was probably the oldest son of Duke Barnim VI. and his wife, who is probably Veronika von Hohenzollern . As Duke Barnim VI. Already died in 1405, his brother Duke Wartislaw VIII took over the guardianship of the young Wartislaw and his brother Barnim VII. Wartislaw IX already divided in 1425. the rule in Western Pomerania north of the Peene with his brother Barnim VII and his cousins Barnim VIII and Swantibor III. However, since he survived all of them, he was able to reunite Pomerania-Wolgast west of the Swine at the end of his rule in 1451.

Outwardly, like his Stettin cousins, he had to deal with the ambitions for power of the Hohenzollerns who had ruled Brandenburg since 1411/17 . For him it was particularly about the pledged possessions of Torgelow and Pasewalk , which the Wolgast dukes had held since 1369. In the peace of 1448 Wartislaw was able to secure these possessions. In the so-called Golden Privilege of 1452, he made extensive concessions to the cities under the leadership of the mighty Stralsund, here in particular the mayor Otto Voge .

Duke Wartislaw IX earned lasting fame. through the sovereign support of the founding of the University of Greifswald in 1456. Only six months after the ceremonial opening of the "alma mater gryphiswaldensis" he died, but had significantly secured its existence with numerous donations and legal awards.
