Dirk Alvermann (* 1965 in Berlin ) is a German historian and archivist .

Dirk Alvermann is a son of the photographer Dirk Alvermann . From 1988 he studied archival science and history at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the Università degli Studi La Sapienza in Rome. In 1993 he passed the master’s examination in Berlin. Alvermann received a scholarship from the German Historical Institute in Rome in 1994 . In 1995 he received his doctorate in Berlin with a thesis inspired by Eckhard Müller-Mertens and supervised by Michael Borgolte on the subject of imperial integration and rule practice under Emperor Otto II. Alvermann then worked at the Greifswald State Archives and the Magdeburg State Archives - State Main Archives . Since 1998 he has been the head of the Greifswald University Archives . Alvermann is a member of the Historical Commission for Pomerania and from 2001 to 2011 was editor of the Baltic Studies board member of the Society for Pomeranian History, Archeology and Art. V. Since 2011 he has been a member of the company's board of directors.

His main research interests are medieval diplomacy , archivistics as well as Pomeranian regional history and university history. In his dissertation, he uses the methods of itinerary analysis to investigate Müller-Mertens' wealth structure and rulership practice of Otto II. He not only concentrates on the northern Alpine region, but also includes Italy in his considerations. As a result, Alvermann states that "the structural features of the early medieval East Franconian-German empire, which Müller-Mertens described on the basis of Otto I's itinerary , are also confirmed for Otto II's reign". However, there are “partial discontinuities with regard to the structure of the empire and the practice of rule”. Under Otto II, the whole of Thuringia became a zone of royal rule. The two southern German duchies of Bavaria and Swabia remained remote zones of royal rule even under Otto II. Especially at the high church festivals, Otto II sought out the “political central areas” in the north. Italy was a "development and construction phase" for both Otto I and his son's reign. The presence in Salerno is “perhaps the most conspicuous sign of an intensification of rule in the Lombard south” under Otto II. Dirk Alvermann is the editor of the Biographical Lexicon for Pomerania together with the historian Nils Jörn .
