Life

Barnim VIII was the son of Duke Wartislaw VIII of Pomerania-Wolgast. After the death of his father in 1415, his widow Agnes von Sachsen-Lauenburg initially had the guardianship of her sons Barnim VIII and Swantibor II and the sons of her brother-in-law Barnim VI. , Wartislaw IX. and Barnim VII . Agnes was assisted by a Regency Council under Kord Bonow . When all heirs to the throne came of age, the Duchy of Pomerania-Wolgast was divided in 1425. Barnim VIII and Swantibor received the Duchy of Barth .

Barnim VIII took part in the Danish-Hanseatic War . In 1427 he led the Danish-Swedish fleet on the side of the Danish king Erich von Pommern, who was distantly related to him , which inflicted a heavy defeat on the Hanseatic fleet in the sea battle in the Öresund . Then he hijacked a convoy of Hanseatic merchant ships that wanted to enter the Baltic Sea.

Barnim VIII also took part in knight tournaments , where he was knocked off his horse in 1434 by the Stralsund councilor and later mayor Arnd Voth. Barnim and Swantibor divided their duchy again in 1435, with Barnim receiving the mainland part except the city of Stralsund . After Swantibor's death in 1440, the island of Rügen fell back to him. In 1441 he acquired the Zingst from the Hiddensee Monastery . With the consent of his cousins, he later pledged the lands of Barth, Zingst and Damgarten to his niece Katharine von Werle for 20,000 guilders. In 1445 he defended the town of Pasewalk together with Barnim VII against the Elector Friedrich II of Brandenburg .

Barnim VIII died of the plague and was buried in Neuenkamp monastery.

He was married to Anna von Wunstorf. With her he had the daughter Agnes (1434–1512), who in 1449 married Friedrich (III.) Of Brandenburg , the fat, and in 1478 Georg II. Of Anhalt .
