George II (Anhalt)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg II of Anhalt (* 1454 ; † April 25, 1509 ) called "the Strong" was a prince of Anhalt-Köthen .

Life

Georg was a son of Prince Georg I von Anhalt-Zerbst (1390-1474) from his fourth marriage to Anna († 1513), daughter of Count Albrecht von Lindau-Ruppin.

In 1470 Georg's father had placed the government in the hands of his sons, who divided the country in 1471. Georg and Waldemar VI. got Anhalt-Köthen and Ernst and Sigismund III. received Anhalt-Dessau , Rudolf was compensated with a sum of money. The part of the state of Anhalt-Bernburg , which fell to the house in 1468, was to be governed by all brothers together.

Georg took service with the Elector of Brandenburg , who appointed him governor of the Duchy of Crossen in 1498 . He was therefore hardly involved in government affairs in Anhalt and appeared, among other things, in the redemption of the pledged Hoym office. In 1478 he married Agnes († 1512), twenty years his senior , daughter of Duke Barnim VIII of Pomerania . The marriage remained childless. Prince Georg was buried in the Ballenstedt Abbey Chapel.

Georg is said to have had extraordinary physical strength, which earned him his nickname; he is said to have killed a bear with a single punch and "crushed" a famous Italian wrestler in first gear.
