Sigismund III. (Anhalt)

Sigismund III. von Anhalt (* 1456 ; † November 27, 1487 in Dessau ) was a prince of Anhalt-Dessau .

Life

Sigismund was a son of Prince Georg I von Anhalt-Zerbst (1390-1474) from his fourth marriage to Anna († 1513), daughter of Count Albrecht von Lindau-Ruppin.

In 1470 Sigismund's father had placed the government in the hands of his sons, who divided the country in 1471. Sigismund and Ernst received Anhalt-Dessau, Georg II and Waldemar VI. got Anhalt-Koethen and Rudolf should be settled with a sum of money. The part of the state of Anhalt-Bernburg , which fell to the house in 1468, was to be governed by all brothers together.

Sigismund was nicknamed " patronus Clericorum ". In 1476 he undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem accompanied by Duke Albrecht of Saxony , but fell seriously ill in Rhodes and was forced to turn back. When he returned to Dessau, he died as the first of the ruling brothers, unmarried and childless.
