Frederick the Younger (Brandenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich the Younger of Brandenburg , also " the fat one ", (* 1422 or 1424; † October 6, 1463 in Tangermünde ) was Margrave of Brandenburg and Lord of the Altmark . He was born later and died earlier than his brother Friedrich II of Brandenburg of the same name .

Life

Friedrich was the youngest son of Elector Friedrich I of Brandenburg (1371–1440) from his marriage to Elisabeth (1383–1442), daughter of Duke Friedrich of Bavaria-Landshut .

On the basis of a paternal order, Friedrich was supposed to rule the Mark Brandenburg together with his older brother, the margrave and elector Friedrich II, also known as Friedrich Eisenzahn, who had been his guardian since 1440, but as early as 1445 he urged more independence. With the support of his brothers Johann and Albrecht , he succeeded in dividing the country in 1447, under electoral sovereignty, to acquire the Altmark and Prignitz . The de facto division of the Kurmark violated the regulations of the Golden Bull (1356) of Charles IV, according to which no electorate could be divided. He promoted the settlement of Jews in his country, whom his brother had driven out of the march in 1446.

Friedrich the Fette resided in Tangermünde, Salzwedel and Arneburg and neglected the affairs of government in such a way that his brother intervened militarily against the activities in the country in 1459. Since Friedrich died without a male heir, the Altmark and Prignitz fell back to Kurbrandenburg, which was ruled by his older brother until 1470. Friedrich was buried in the town church of St. Georg von Arneburg. In the Thirty Years' War his tomb was looted and destroyed. The remains were brought back together and buried in Berlin.

progeny

On February 9, 1449, Friedrich married Agnes (1436–1512), daughter of Duke Barnim VIII of Pomerania , in Tangermünde , with whom he had a daughter:

⚭ 1482 Count Eitel Friedrich II of Hohenzollern (1452–1512)
