Wolfgang Ribbe

Wolfgang Ribbe (born January 3, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German historian who has presented numerous works, primarily on the history of Berlin-Brandenburg and recent German history . From 1996 to 2009 he was chairman of the Historical Commission in Berlin .

Life

After the state examination (1967) in the subjects of Ancient and Modern German Studies, Medieval and Modern History, Philosophy, Political Science and Education, Ribbe received his doctorate in 1971 as a research assistant to Reinhard Elze with a thesis on late medieval chronicle. Appointed assistant professor in 1972, Ribbe completed his habilitation in 1976 with studies on the Cistercians in Brandenburg, for which he edited, among other things, the “Lehnin Abbey Trial Register”. In 1978 the Berlin Senator for Science appointed him to a professorship for the history of Berlin-Brandenburg at the Free University of Berlin , which he held until 1996. Guest invitations from universities have taken him to France, China, Japan and the USA.

Ribbe took part in several university research projects (Cistercians, "Germania Slavica", social mobility in the early modern state) or initiated them (capital financing in Germany). In addition, there are urban historical research, u. a. in cooperation with town planners, architects and monument conservationists. He edited central sources on the medieval and recent history of Berlin-Brandenburg, published basic handbooks on the history of the region, published the results of numerous conferences in conference proceedings and took on the scientific advice of TV media projects.
