Career as a player
society
The 1.88 goalkeeper began playing handball in 1972 at RK Partizan Bjelovar , the dominant club in Yugoslavia at the time. At the age of 17 he made his debut in the European Cup . He won his first championship title in 1977 and 1979. A year later he moved to Metaloplastika Šabac , where he was to become part of a team of the century that was to win the Yugoslav Championship and three cups from 1982 to 1988. In the European Champions Cup he lost the final in 1984 in the seven-meter throw against Dukla Prague , but triumphed in 1985 and 1986 . Overall, he was at least six times in a row in the semifinals. During his time in Sabac, he also did compulsory military service. After a short stint at RK Agram Medveščak Zagreb , he moved to the French LNH for Vénissieux Handball , with which he won the championship in 1992. He then joined the financially strong and up-and-coming OM Vitrolles and won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1993 and his second French title in 1994. At the age of 33, he interrupted his career for two and a half years. After his return he reached the Champions League final three times in a row with Badel Zagreb , but was subject to the overpowering FC Barcelona. After ending his career with Medveščak in 2002, he made a short comeback for two European Cup matches with Hungarian champions Fotex Veszprém in March 2003 due to the injury of Arpad Šterbik .
National team
With the Yugoslav national junior team Bašić was vice world champion in 1979 and world champion in 1981. A year later he was defeated with the Yugoslav men's national team at the 1982 World Cup despite five seven meters in the final of the Soviet Union. In the 1984 Olympics , the team won the gold medal, just as in the 1986 World Cup . Bronze was achieved at the 1988 Olympic Games . In 2000 he returned to the Croatian national team at the European Championships in his own country . In total, the goalkeeper made at least 133 international appearances for Yugoslavia and 47 for Croatia.
