Kristján Arason (born July 23, 1961 ) is an Icelandic handball coach and former handball player , who was mostly used on the right back area.

The 1.94 m tall and 91 kg heavy left-hander began his career at FH Hafnarfjörður , with whom he became Icelandic champion in 1984 and 1985. In 1985 he moved to the German 2nd handball league for VfL Hameln and then to VfL Gummersbach , with whom he won the German championship in 1988. He then went to Spain to Teka Santander , with whom he won the Copa del Rey de Balonmano in 1988/89 , the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1989/90 and the ASOBAL league in 1990/1991 . After three years he returned to Hafnarfjörður as a player- coach and won another championship in 1992. In 1994 he became a coach at TSV Bayer Dormagen , from 1996 at SG Wallau / Massenheim , where he was dismissed in April 1997. He later coached his hometown club FH Hafnarfjörður again, which he led to a new title in 2011. In March 2014 he took over the post there again.

With the Icelandic national team Kristján Arason took part in the Olympic Games in 1984 (6th place) and 1988 (8th place). In Seoul he was the fourth top scorer of the tournament with 33 goals in six games. At the 1986 World Cup , he was the fifth best shooter with 41 hits. Arason played 245 international matches in which he scored 1,123 goals.

Kristján Arason is married to the Icelandic politician and former handball player Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir . They have three children together. His son Gísli Þorgeir Kristjánsson plays in the handball Bundesliga at SC Magdeburg .

Kristján Arason was CEO of Kaupthing Bank .
