St. Dionysius and Egidius (colloquially Dionyskirche or Old Church ) is a Catholic church in Schwarzenfeld in Upper Palatinate . It is the old parish church of the parish of Schwarzenfeld. She belongs to the dean's office in Nabburg .

geography

The church is located in the center of Schwarzenfeld, on Schlossstrasse. Schwarzenfeld Castle is also in the immediate vicinity .

history

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1326. In 1433 the church was destroyed by the Hussites . Then it was rebuilt. She survived the Thirty Years' War unscathed. On May 2nd, 1707 it burned down again. It was then rebuilt in the baroque style . It was given its current structure after further damage in the 1750s. Between 1987 and 1989 the church underwent extensive renovations.

Architecture and equipment

The Dionyskirche is a small hall church with a polygonal end. The bell tower with a conical dome is attached to the side. In contrast to the simple exterior is the rich interior. It includes high quality baroque altarpieces and Rococo ceiling frescoes . The focus is on the church patron Dionysius Areopagita - traditionally equated with Dionysius of Paris - and Aegidius .

The frescoes are attributed to Johann Michael Wild . While the stucco and the pastel-colored frescoes date from around 1760, the three altars are much stricter. Therefore, it is assumed that they were built between 1725 and 1730. The same applies to the pulpit, which is dated to around 1722. The high altar picture shows the main patron of the church, St. Dionysius. The oldest part of the church is located on the south wall in the tower, there is still a Gothic window that must have come from the previous building.

Others

The Schwarzenfeld Tower Museum has been located in the tower of the church since 1999 , in which sacred objects such as prayer books , images of saints, rosaries and Christmas cribs from the 19th and 20th centuries are exhibited. The church is still used today for weddings, baptisms and similar occasions. Furthermore, Holy Mass is celebrated here every Monday at 5:30 p.m.
