Pavle Jurina (born January 2, 1955 in Našice , SFR Yugoslavia ; † December 2, 2011 in Bjelovar , Croatia ) was a Croatian handball coach and handball player who was mostly used on the right back area. Jurina died of heart failure on December 2, 2011 .

Career

The 1.94 m tall and 95 kg heavy left-hander during his active time began playing handball in his hometown at RK Partizan Našice . In 1976 he moved to RK Partizan Bjelovar , with whom he won the Yugoslav championship in 1977 and 1979. In the mid-1980s he left his home country and went to SC Gaeta in Italy. In the 1986/1987 season he played for the German Bundesliga promoted TuS Schutterwald . Despite 150 goals in 26 games, he could not prevent relegation. The right backcourt player was voted best handball player in Yugoslavia three times (1979, 1980 and 1982).

With the Yugoslav national team Pavle Jurina took part in the first Supercup 1979 in Germany. In the same year he won the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in Split. A year later he reached fifth place at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and was the top scorer of his team with 33 hits in six games. At the 1982 World Cup in Germany, he won another medal. In the final he was defeated by the Soviet selection with 27:30 after extra time. At the Mediterranean Games in Morocco in 1983, he again won the gold medal. He achieved his greatest success at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. By 18:17 in the final over Germany he became Olympic champion . With this triumph he ended his national team career after 140 missions.

After the end of his playing days, he coached several Italian teams.

His son Jan Jurina is a handball goalkeeper at SSV Bozen Loacker .
