Vasile Stîngă (born January 21, 1957 in Hunedoara , Hunedoara district ) is a former Romanian handball player and today's handball coach .

Time as a player

From 1977 to 1989 Stîngă played for the first team of Steaua Bucharest . With the club he was Romanian champion ten times (1979–1985 and 1987–1989) and two cup winners (1981 and 1985). In 1989, Steaua also reached the final of the European Champion Clubs' Cup . There they were defeated by SKA Minsk after a first leg win (30:24) in the overall account by a 23:37 defeat in Minsk . In 1989 Stîngă was allowed to move to the West and joined CB Avidesa Valencia . With Valencia he won the Spanish Cup in 1992 . In 1992 Stîngă had to end his career after a serious knee injury.

Vasile Stîngă was able to win the bronze medal with the Romanian team both at the Summer Olympics in Moscow in 1980 and at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984 . In both tournaments Stîngă was the best field scorer in the competition. He also took part in world championships twice (1978 and 1982). In 1982 he was the top scorer with 65 goals. The number of goals was a new World Cup record back then.

With the student national team, Stîngă was university world champion in 1981 and 1985. He was mainly used in the left back space, but could also move into the middle of the back space. Despite his relatively small height of 1.88 m, he was a feared backcourt shooter.
