Nicolae Munteanu

Nicolae Munteanu (born December 7, 1951 in Brașov ) is a former Romanian handball goalkeeper .

He played for Tractorul Brașov and from 1971 for Steaua Bucharest . With the club from the capital, he was fourteen times Romanian champion.

For the Romanian national team , Munteanu played 238 international matches, in which he scored six goals. He represented his country at the 1978 World Cup and the 1982 World Cup , where Romania finished seventh and fifth. His three Olympics were more successful. In Montreal in 1976 , Romania won silver after losing 15:19 in the final to the Soviet Union. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, the Romanian team was level on points with the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia after the group games, but came in second place due to the goal difference, so that the final was missed. In the game for third place, they won against Hungary. Romania also won bronze at the 1984 Olympic Games , with Munteanu captaining his team in Los Angeles.

After his active career, Munteanu was in France 1989/90 and 1991/92 coach of US Dunkerque and 1990/1991 of HC Antibes . After that he was part of the coaching team of the Romanian national team until 2007.
