Marian Dumitru (born March 18, 1960 in Ploieştiori ) is a former Romanian handball player .

He started playing handball at the age of 15 in Ploieşti and moved to Steaua Bucharest in 1978 . With the club from the capital, he was Romanian champion eleven times. After the Romanian Revolution in 1989 , Dumitru played from 1990 to 1992 in the handball Bundesliga for TSV Bayer Dormagen . For the factory club he scored 274 goals in 43 games. Then Dumitru went to Spain and won the EHF Cup 1993/94 with the CBM Alzira Avidesa . Later Dumitru was still with lower-class clubs and ended his career in 2002 with the regional league club VfL Waiblingen .

For the Romanian national team Dumitru played 187 international matches, in which he scored 762 goals. This makes him the fifth best scorer in Romania. At both the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he won the bronze medal with Romania. At the 1982 World Cup he was fifth with the Romanian team and ninth at the 1986 World Cup . At the 1990 World Cup , Dumitru led his team to the bronze medal as captain and top scorer. His last major international competition was the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​in which Romanians finished eighth.

Marian Dumitrus son Sergiu Dumitru played in the 2nd handball league.
