Thomas Springel

Thomas Springel (born May 15, 1959 in Aachen ) is a former German handball player who won the Olympic silver medal in 1984.

The 1.94 meter tall left-hander began his career at Schwarz-Rot Aachen and then moved to TuS Derschlag in the handball Bundesliga . After relegation with Derschlag, Springel joined TUSEM Essen in 1979 .

Thomas Springel played in a total of 78 international matches in the German national team . The backcourt player scored 101 goals. On January 4, 1980 he made his international debut against China in Hamburg. At the handball world championship in 1982 , he finished seventh with the German team. The team was more successful at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . Springel was one of four Essenes in the squad with Jochen Fraatz , Thomas Happe and Dirk Rauin . Springel played five games in Los Angeles, including in the final in the 18:17 defeat by Yugoslavia, where he scored two of his eight goals. In May 1987 he played his last international match against Hungary.
