Harry Zörnack

Harry Zörnack (born March 8, 1939 in Danzig ) is a former German handball player who played in the GDR handball league for BSG Wismut Aue and SC Leipzig in the 1960s and 1970s . He played 114 international matches with the GDR national handball team .

Athletic career

The 1.87 meter tall Zörnack began his handball career in the agricultural company sports community (BSG) Traktor in the Ore Mountains Pöhla . After his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, he joined the BSG Wismut Aue, with whom he rose to the field handball league in 1960 and in the indoor handball league in 1961. He quickly developed into a dangerous goalscorer and was instrumental in ensuring that Wismut Aue was always one of the best company sports clubs in the league.

In 1963 he was appointed to the national team for the first time and played 114 international matches by 1971. He was represented at the handball world championships in 1964 , 1967 and 1970 and was runner-up in 1970. At the 1972 Olympic Games , he played all six games of the GDR team, which was fourth in the tournament. From 1969 Zörnack was temporarily captain of the national team.

For the 1971/72 season Zörnack moved to the league club SC Leipzig, with whom he was GDR champions at the end of the season. After only one year he returned to Wismut Aue, where he remained active in the league until 1974 as a prudent defensive conductor. In 1981 he was appointed coach of the top division team of BSG Wismut, after having previously coached the juniors.
