Valery Dmitrievich Gassi

Valery Dmitrijewitsch Gassi ( Russian Валерий Дмитриевич Гассий , born April 22, 1948 in Kolomyja ; † February 1, 2004 in Krasnodar ) was a Soviet - Ukrainian handball player .

The 1.89 m tall and 86 kg heavy middle back player played for Burewestnik Krasnodar and for CSKA Moscow . In 1973 he won the Soviet championship with CSKA.

With the Soviet national team , Valery Gassi took part in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and took fifth place. Four years later he became Olympic champion at the Montreal Olympics. There he threw 25 goals in five games, including five hits at 19:15 in the final against Romania. For the Olympic victory he received the award of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (Заслуженный мастер спорта СССР). At the 1978 World Cup, he lost to the German team in the final with 19:20 . He scored five times from seven meters . Gassi played 83 international matches in which he scored 277 goals.

Gassi completed his teaching degree at Kuban State University in 1971.
