Klaus Hangover

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Klaus Kater (born June 16, 1948 in Marienheide in Oberbergisches Land) is a former German handball goalkeeper .

He took his first steps on the handball field in Kotthausen . He played for VfL Gummersbach from 1966 to 1976. In 1977 he moved to the regional league team Bayer Leverkusen , with whom he was promoted to the second and first Bundesliga several times. He became particularly well known for standing as close as possible in front of the shooter when taking a seven-meter throw in order to better cover the goal and thus provoke false throws. That was still unusual back then. The successful method found many imitators, and a mark had to be made in the gate circle at a permitted distance of three meters from the shooter.

With the VfL Gummersbach team, he won the European Champions Cup in 1967 and was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on April 28, 1967.

With the German national team he reached the 5th and 9th place at the World Championships in 1970 and 1974. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he was sixth with the same team.

The trained toolmaker is the father of two children. Since 1978 he worked for the media company Dynevo GmbH, which belongs to the Bayer plant in Leverkusen . He is now retired.
