Wladimir Salmanowitsch Maximow ( Russian Влади́мир Салманович Макси́мов , scientific transliteration Vladimir Salmanovič Maximov ; born October 14, 1945 in Kant , Kyrgyz SSR , Soviet Union or in Potsdam ) is a Russian handball coach and former handball player . The playing position of the right-hander was mostly in the right back space .

Career as a player

Maximov first played at the University of Krasnodar (now SKIF Krasnodar ) and then for MAI Moscow .

For the Soviet national team Maximov played 172 international games in which he threw 690 goals. During his active time as a handball player Maximov was the captain of the Soviet national team. He ended his international career in 1978 with the final game of the World Cup , which the Soviet Union lost to the Federal Republic of Germany at 19:20. In that game he scored two goals.

Career as a coach

In 1992 he was still an assistant coach, but soon he was mainly responsible until 2008, with one interruption, as head coach of the Russian men's national handball team . After the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , he temporarily handed over the office to Anatoly Drachev . When the success of the national team failed to materialize, he took over the coaching post for the 2006 European Championship , which he gave up again after the 2008 Olympic Games . Since his successor Nikolai Tschigarjow could not show any great success, Maximov again took over the post of national coach. In January 2012 he resigned from this office. Since 2001 Maximov was also the coach of Medvedi Chekhov . In addition to his coaching position, he was general director of the Russian handball association. Currently (as of 2014) he is President of the Medvedi Chekhov Club.
