Rudolf "Rudi" Rauer (born January 15, 1950 in Unna ; † July 15, 2014 in Bönen ) was a German national handball player . The goalkeeper completed a total of 68 international matches from 1974 to 1980, and he scored a goal in a friendly against Israel on July 20, 1978.
Career
He learned to play handball at VfL Kamen, from there he switched to TV Schalksmühle , in the Bundesliga he played at TuS Wellinghofen and VfL Gummersbach as well as the second division team TV Emsdetten . Still as a player in the regional league team Schalksmühler TV, he made his debut on October 26, 1974 in the national team, which, however, had traveled to a tournament in Switzerland with an actual B selection. 1975 Rauer moved to TuS Wellinghofen in the Bundesliga. He made his first division debut with four international matches on September 20, 1975 when his new club played at VfL Bad Schwartau. In 1977/78 he played again with TuS Wellinghofen in the then second-class regional league after Dortmund missed qualifying for the single-track Bundesliga under dramatic circumstances at the green table. Nevertheless, he continued to play regularly in the national team and was part of the world championship squad in February 1978. At the beginning of the 1978/79 season he moved back to the Bundesliga for VfL Gummersbach, with whom he won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1979 and the German championship in 1982 . As early as 1981, still as an active player, he was assistant coach of the national team under national coach Vlado Stenzel , whom he assisted at the 1982 World Cup. Rauer had completed his last international matches as a goalkeeper at the Baltic Cup in January 1980. In the summer of 1982 Rauer moved as a goalkeeper to the regional division TV Emsdetten, with whom he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1985. In the 1989/90 season he helped out at Bundesliga club TUSEM Essen shortly before the end of the season in the play-off games of the Bundesliga and the last European Cup games after Stefan Hecker was injured in the last league point game.
For years, Rudi Rauer was the second goalkeeper behind Manfred Hofmann in the national team . With the DHB selection he took part on March 6, 1976 in Karl-Marx-Stadt in the qualification for the 1976 Olympic Games against the GDR. He was a member of the team that finished 4th at the Montreal Olympics . He was also a member of the squad that became world champion in 1978 , but was not used in the final.
