PAR-80
The precision approach radar PAR-80 ( P recision A pproach R adar) is the successor to the approach radar AN / FPN-36 . This air traffic control radar is installed directly next to the take- off runway at airfields and supports the air traffic controller in the last flight phase before landing. An ideal glide path and the aircraft are displayed on a display device . If the current position of the aircraft deviates from this ideal line, the air traffic controller can communicate this to the pilot via radio ("speaking down").
The PAR-80 works with a phased array antenna whose beam is swiveled electronically and vertically in a horizontal sector with a high-precision gear with elliptical gears. For greater security, the electronic assemblies are duplicated; a second system is always available in addition to the device that is currently working.
