Stefan Hecker (born April 16, 1959 in Krefeld ; † August 19, 2019 in Essen ) was a German handball goalkeeper .

Career

Hecker was active at TV Oppum (until 1979), TUSEM Essen (1979-2000) and VfL Gummersbach (2000-2004). He played 561 games for Essen and Gummersbach in the handball Bundesliga and was only replaced as the record Bundesliga player in 2006 by Jan Holpert from Flensburg . He also played in 159 international matches for the German national team . He made his international debut on October 18, 1980 against Czechoslovakia. In 1982 and 1986 he took part in the world championships. With the TUSEM Essen, Hecker was three times German champion (1986, 1987 and 1989), three times DHB cup winner (1988, 1991 and 1992). In 1989 he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Essen and the Euro City Cup in 1994 .

In 1990 Hecker was voted handball player of the year . His older brother Harry Hecker was also a handball goalkeeper, at the beginning of the eighties they both played together at TUSEM Essen. With Andreas Thiel , Stefan Hecker formed the exceptional German goalkeeper duo in international handball in the 1980s. Together with him he also wrote the textbook for handball goalkeepers holding like us .

Until September 2008, Hecker was Managing Director at VfL Gummersbach. On October 1, 2008, Stefan Hecker switched to the management of TUSEM Essen and helped put the club back on the road to success after relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga.

Private

Stefan Hecker succumbed to longstanding cancer on August 19, 2019 . His wife Claudia confirmed this to the German Press Agency (dpa). At his request, he was buried in the closest family circle in the Essen district of Heisingen , his last place of residence.
